Dear Mr Smith and all at the Bromsgrove Institute Trust
I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your generous contribution towards the cost of my trip to Finland. The trip went ahead as planned in August and was a great success.
As a reminder, it was a European Service Project — an Environment and Conservation project working with the local community in Punkaharju, Eastern Finland. It was quite a long journey to get there, but it was absolutely worth it!
This trip provided me with many valuable experiences and opportunities for growth:
• Cultural immersion:
I embraced Finnish culture and traditions — including enjoying more than ten saunas! We also baked pulla, traditional cardamom-scented yeasted buns.
• Personal growth:
I developed confidence travelling independently in a foreign country and improved my survival and teamwork skills.
• Global awareness:
I gained a deeper understanding of global environmental issues and the challenges faced by different communities around the world.
• Community service:
I helped build seal-proof fishing nets for local fishermen, which will help protect fish stocks and support sustainable fishing.
• Friendship building:
I connected with other people at our camp, including some of Russian heritage, and spent time with Finnish Scouts doing water activities and helping build a fence together.
• Skill development:
I designed the jumpers that everyone wore throughout the expedition, which was a fun and creative project.
• Adventure and exploration:
I had the chance to drive a speedboat, sail, canoe, swim in the lake, and even catch a fish with a homemade rod!
Overall, it was a fantastic experience. I learned so much, made new friends, and created memories that will last a lifetime. I am very grateful that I was able to go — thank you once again for making it possible. My parents Tom and Mary also pass on their thanks.
Yours sincerely
Hollie Evans (Aged 15)
